Helping You Find Your Perfect Pearl... The Lust Pearls Story
Buying the perfect pearl is an experience that can only be beaten by owning and wearing one! There is something which is hard to put into words about owning something as mesmerising, captivating and alluring as a pearl.
Perhaps it is the mystique surrounding pearls and how they are made, or it could be how we connect with our ancestors who adored pearls. Some were fortunate and could see and touch them up close; others could only admire them from afar being prevented, by laws and status, from owning them themselves.
Unlike gemstones produced deep inside the Earth, pearls are created by living creatures. Naturally occurring pearls are extremely rare with only one pearl found in every 10,000 molluscs.
The pearl is the oldest known gem, and for centuries it was considered the most valuable. Chinese records indicate that as far back as 2,300 BC, pearls were the prized possession, and gifts, of royalty.
Pearls have captured the hearts and minds of people for thousands of years. In ancient Rome, they were a highly prized accessory and worn as a symbol of wealth and prestige.
In the modern day, pearls still have an allure which is hard to deny. In 1969, Richard Burton purchased the La Peregrine pearl for his wife, Elizabeth Taylor. At the time he paid $37,000 for this rare beauty. She owned it until her death when it was sold for $11.8 million dollars by Christie’s in 2011.
There are many other pearls which have a similar star studded history.
The Exclusive Possession of Royalty and Aristocracy Becomes Readily Available for Everyone
With the arrival of cultured pearls in the international market in the 1930’s, pearls became more available and affordable than ever before. Although many people rejected cultured pearls as “imitation” pearls, a handful of designers such as Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, embraced them.
“A woman needs ropes and ropes of pearls” - Coco Chanel
Since then, cultured pearls have become the norm and they are highly sought after, too. With the explosion of cultured pearl production there have, and are circumstances (at all levels of the market) where unscrupulous people, or those who through product ignorance, do sell pearls intentionally, or otherwise, to mislead buyers into purchasing a lower quality pearl for a high quality price.
There are many examples of this occurring when fresh water pearls are sold as the much rarer South Sea pearls.
The cultured pearl industry is a complex one with many layers of expertise and distribution.
It sounds a difficult path to traverse, however with a few pearls of wisdom, you can avoid being a victim of deceptive practices.
How do I know?
It’s Jill Hansen here… I’ve been in the pearl industry for over 20 years and I have seen it all. I have experienced the wondrous side of the industry and I have witnessed and experienced the undesirable side.
Now you can read my “7 Pearls of Wisdom You Need to Know Before You Invest in Your Perfect Pearl.” It is filled with wisdom I have learned along the way, so you can buy pearls with absolute confidence and total peace of mind.
But before I get ahead of myself… Why should you listen to me?
I am glad you asked! Let me tell you a little bit about myself.
It is my respect for people and love of pearls which is why I have created this pack.
I’ve Always Had an Eye For Detail and a Passion For Beauty
I entered the beauty industry when I left school and was presented with fantastic opportunities which I embraced early in my career. I stayed within the industry for 20 years, working in both Australia and the UK. I enjoyed these years with a busy clientele, teaching, stage work and a bridal service. In this exciting industry however, there came a time when I just knew it was time to move on. By the time I was 33 I had travelled to over 30 countries experiencing many of the world’s cultures. A number of these countries are now steeped in conflict.
I’d moved back to Australia with a deep stirring feeling that I was capable of so much more than I was currently doing. I had accomplished so much and was eager to try something new.
My circumstances in life had changed and I was sharing a house with a Japanese pearl technician. He had travelled to many different countries over 25 years culturing pearls. He was highly experienced in seeding, culturing and taking the pearls to the international wholesale market. His passion for pearls was infectious! I was captivated.
It Was Exactly What I Was Looking For!
He saw my enthusiasm and offered me a position with an opportunity to set up and develop, on his behalf, a wholesale business here in Australia selling his harvests of South Sea black pearls. I ran with this opportunity and was to become the first person based in Perth to sell black South Sea pearls into the Western Australian jewellery industry and then nationally.
To learn and understand pearls and the pearl industry, I was flown to the remote islands of Manihiki and Penhryn in the Cook Islands. There I was taught the skill of seeding, harvesting and grading South Sea pearls and I learnt all I could about pearl culturing.
Living on these tiny tropical islands, close to nature, was a wonderful experience despite the fact that there was limited medical facilities and fresh water, and the sea level islands were vulnerable to the ravages of storms. But fresh fish, coconuts and, most particularly, pearls were abundant.…
One experience I had on the island will stay with me forever. It has had a deeply profound effect on my life and my jewellery.
It was a hot steamy night in May 1996 and I was having trouble sleeping. I decided to get up and go to the bathroom. It was a bit of a walk from the hut I was sleeping in. As I walked along the jungle path with my trusty torch, I looked up to glance at the stars. The remoteness of the island made the sky blacker than the pearls I was grading!
The Milky Way looked spectacular as always… but there was something else that caught my eye! My quick glance turned into a gaze as I tried to comprehend what I was looking at! I had never seen anything like it before (and sadly will never see again!)
Right there in front of me was an enormous ball of light. It was so close, so clear, with a tail of light trailing behind. It was hard to believe what I was seeing. I stood mesmerised by the sight for several minutes before I could awaken from my enchanted state! I continued on with my original mission and went back to bed… my head full of wonder and inspiration.
With no regular news to keep us up to date with world events, it took a while to discover the spectacular sight I had witnessed was The Great Comet of 1996 (Comet Hyakutake.) What a rare sight indeed!
That Night And My Time On The Island Was The Source Of Inspiration For Lust Pearls
Because of my island experience, I have a real connection to pearls and love their simple beauty. This comes from having a deep understanding of how they are created by a living creature.
To me Lust jewellery is a connection between the pearls in the lagoon and the sparkle of the light from the stars glimmering above in the Milky Way. It is the essence of the moon reflecting on the waters of the lagoon and the rareness of seeing Comet Hyakutake. (This comet is an infrequent visitor with an orbital period of 70,000 years!)
After the wonderful training, successes and experiences, it was time for me to step out and develop my dream of Lust jewellery. Pearls delicately inlayed with sparkling diamonds, to give you a piece of jewellery as rare and unique as you.
Hard Work and The Pursuit of Perfection
It has been a long journey to build Lust™ Pearls into the unique brand it is today. I have sold many millions of dollars worth of pearls during my career. Lust jewellery has been worn at the Oscars and even noticed by royalty.
There have been many trials and tribulations. For this reason I have developed great associations within the pearling industry which allows me to source pearls unavailable to some pearl wholesalers and jewellers. However, one thing has always remained constant… my commitment to ensuring buyers of Lust pearls and jewellery have the best experience before, during and after their purchase.
You see, when you buy a pearl, you should be treated like the VIP you are. You are buying a precious, unique gem that is one of a kind. Any and all questions you have need to be answered courteously and honestly. You need to know what you are buying is real and valuable.
I can help you pick your perfect pearl jewellery and if it is for that someone special, I can also help you to make it a memorable occasion. With a customised gift wrapping service, my team can ensure the presentation of your gift is as thoughtful as you are.
Pearls will last you a lifetime and be with you as you create memories. Your perfect pearl needs to reflect who you are and complement your individuality.
Lust Pearls prides itself on its difference and individuality… both in our exquisite jewellery and our customer care. To us, perfection is about more than just the pearls.
